Thank Goodness for Grandma!

Today is my mom’s birthday! Hooray Mommee! She is an incredible person, the perfect combination of selflessness and sarcasm. And it’s pretty damn amazing to see your mom turn into a grandma. I wanted to make a short tribute to how awesome she is and show you why we say “Thank goodness for Grandma!”

When I really think about it, I imagine that the transition from “parent” to “grandparent” is actually pretty confusing. You’re now a glorified advisor and supporter, and no longer the decision maker. I know my mom and I have disagreed on quite a lot of things; sometimes we wound up seeing eye-to-eye, and sometimes we agreed to disagree.

As a Grandma, you have the benefit of giving the kids back after a fun afternoon or an exciting breakfast. You don’t have to deal with all of the day-to-day stuff. You’re fun and exciting and you always have something fun to do!

But I’m sure it also hurts to not be “the one” anymore. As Grandma, you’re now usually the backup singer. You feel helpless – even more so than the mother does – when you don’t know how to help, or there’s nothing you can do. You may not get to see your grandkids as often as you’d like.

But thank goodness for Grandma! My kids adore their Grandma and look forward to seeing her. She’s creative and always makes them laugh; she’s warm and full of hugs; and she helps them see the world in a new way.

I’m so grateful that my mom is not only an incredible mother and confidant and friend and cheerleader for me, but that she loves my kids immensely. She’s the most selfless person I know, and she’s always thinking of my kids. That is such a blessing!

So let’s all wish my mom, and my kids’ beloved Grandma, a very happy birthday! We love you so very much every day!

My mum is the same. And so is my husband’s mother. They are so hands on and are there for the two of us as well as for our children. We know how blessed we are to have them and I only wish other members of my family could see how amazing they are. But we know and we tell them so, I guess that’s important. And you’re right, it’s so lovely seeing how much love they have for our children.
Thank you for celebrating your mum. Grandparents deserve more respect than they get. And a big happy birthday to her! 😊 xx
