My kids, aged six and almost four years old, have gotten a lot of strange toys over the years. We’ve had talking dinosaurs and funny baby dolls, demented-looking ponies and books with creepy bedtime stories. But there’s one toy that tops the list of the weirdest toy they’ve ever gotten… And they love it, years later! Read on for this hilarious and unique review, complete with a short video demo.

The Weirdest Toy That My Kids Love - Real Simple Mama

Let’s get right to it: This robot is awesome. It’s quirky. It’s… weird. We’re talking about the Glantop Mechanical Commando 3, which is about $25 on Amazon

We love our weirdest toy because:

  • It’s appropriate for kids aged 3+.
  • While the remote is complex, it’s easy to hold and lightweight.
  • The robot is durable and lightweight (can we say “Drop test”?)
  • Battery life is great on the remote and the robot charges via USB, completely in about two hours.
  • The speaker on the robot is great.
  • The range between robot and remote is good for at least three meters.
  • The robot works well on smooth floors and on short carpet.
  • Kids can practice simple coding by “programming” a sequence of moves and then hitting the “Program” button so that the robot performs the series.
  • Dance, sing, recite English words and phrases, and learn about the universe!

We’re not crazy about the weirdest toy we have because:

  • The speaker can be pretty loud, in case you don’t want Backstreet Boys or Michael Jackson throughout your house.
  • This is not a complex robot and kids older than eight would probably not be interested.
  • It has to charge via USB which is inconvenient for some.
  • There are lots of similar brands and products online.
  • (There are also more features, like a more expressive face/eyes and motion sensors, with newer models.)

Overall, for the money, this toy is hilarious and enjoyable. My kids play with it regularly, and it’s survived multiple moves and toy purges. I don’t think it’s particularly revolutionary and it’s certainly not a beacon for learning English, but for dancing and playing songs – as well as getting kids accustomed to using a two-handed remote – I think it’s a great toy for the money. Even if it is the weirdest toy we have, my kids love it!

Tell me about the weirdest toy you have in the comments – and as promised, here’s our video demo with the Glantop Mechanical Commando 3!
