Chickens are fascinating, aren’t they? They’re unique and hilarious, they just need some shelter and love and they make you breakfast! If you’re looking for some weird foods and snacks that your backyard chickens can eat, check out RSM’s list below!
Remember that RSM is not a medical professional and that this list ain’t perfect. Do your own research and be a vigilant chicken tender so you can keep your backyard flock safe and healthy.
- Live animals – worms, feeder fish, etc.
- Animal carcasses and meat bones from cooking in your kitchen – think rotisserie
- Frozen fruit and veggies – watch out for sodium/salt, butter, onions, added sugar
- Greek yogurt – plain, unflavored, no extra sweetener; past the due date/expired is ok but check for mold
- Pumpkins – some say that raw pumpkins, especially the seeds and “guts” have a chemical that helps prevent internal parasites
- Dog and cat food, wet or dry – this is a great protein boost if you have a chicken going through a hard molt, or fighting an illness/injury too
- Eggs – cook them full and give them back to your backyard flock!
- Fresh veggie scraps
- Plants and cuttings
